NIGERIA’S Ministry of Transportation has officially confirmed the recommencement of the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri rail link project after facing delays in 2021. This significant infrastructure initiative aims to bolster regional trade and position Nigeria as a leader in West Africa’s railway system.
The project is under the purview of China Railway Construction Corporation’s subsidiary, the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCCECC). The Ministry of Transportation views this project as pivotal for Nigeria’s industrialisation and urbanisation, anticipating positive impacts on resource development and employment opportunities.
A crucial milestone in the project is the completion of track laying from Port Harcourt to Aba, marking progress in the east-to-north expansion. The eastern section of the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Rail Link will interconnect cities across 12 states, fostering growth through additional branch tracks.
The primary focus of this construction effort is the renovation and restoration of rail tracks spanning from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, aiming to establish a robust rail system in Nigeria. The rail link’s completion is integral to Nigeria’s trade leadership in Africa and would be instrumental in connecting seaports for efficient goods movement across West and Central Africa.
The federal government initiated construction in March of the previous year, outlining a comprehensive scope that involved repairing and reconstructing the 1,443-kilometre Eastern Railway Line. The operational span covers states such as Rivers, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, and Borno.
While the rail link was initially slated for completion by November 2023, the timeline faced adjustments. The current Minister of Transportation affirmed the project’s ongoing status, dispelling rumours of abandonment. Supporters of the former transportation minister and governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, are vindicated as the project resumes, debunking speculations of neglect and underscoring its strategic importance for Nigeria’s future economic growth.
