INSTAGRAM, Facebook, Messenger, and Threads experienced widespread outages on Tuesday, leaving users unable to access their accounts and encountering difficulties loading content.
Reports of Facebook outages surged on Down Detector just before 3pm GMT, with over 300,000 problems logged. Similarly, more than 25,000 Instagram outages were reported via the website, which aggregates status reports from various sources, including users.
The issues plaguing Facebook seemed to prevent users from logging in, as many had been unexpectedly logged out and were unable to reset their passwords or regain access to their accounts. Instagram users also encountered problems loading their timelines, stories, and comments.
Interestingly, WhatsApp, another platform owned by Meta, appeared to be unaffected by the problems experienced by Instagram and Facebook users.
Andy Stone, the communications director at Meta, acknowledged the situation in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, ‘We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.’
The outages were not limited to a specific region, as reports were coming in from users across the globe, suggesting that the issue was widespread.
London-based internet monitoring firm Netblocks provided insights into the situation, indicating that the four Meta platforms were ‘currently experiencing outages related to login sessions in multiple countries.’ However, there was no evidence of ‘country-level internet disruptions or filtering,’ which are typically instigated by governmental authorities.
