IN a landmark development, the government of Guinea revealed on Tuesday that stakeholders involved in the Simandou iron ore project have inked financing agreements worth a staggering $15bn. The agreements, aimed at bolstering crucial infrastructure, represent a significant step forward for one of the world’s most ambitious mining ventures.

The financing arrangements will primarily fund the construction of rail and port infrastructure, essential for the transportation and exportation of iron ore extracted from the Simandou region. Compagnie du Trans-Guinéen, a joint venture in which the Guinean government holds a 15 percent stake, while the remaining 85 percent is divided equally between a Rio Tinto group with Chinese investors and the China-backed Winning Consortium Simandou, will spearhead these infrastructure projects.

According to a statement from Guinea’s presidential office, the signing ceremony took place on April 2 following approvals from both the country’s transitional parliament and Chinese regulatory authorities.

Djiba Diakite, head of the strategic committee leading the negotiations, expressed confidence in the project’s future, stating, ‘Simandou is no longer a dream but a reality. There is no doubt that the project will be delivered on schedule by the end of December 2025.’

The project, which received approval from Rio Tinto’s board in February, is poised to become the world’s largest and highest-grade new iron ore mine upon completion. It is expected to contribute approximately 5 percent to the global seaborne supply of iron ore upon commencement of operations.

Simandou’s development journey has been characterised by prolonged negotiations, largely due to its intricate ownership structure, legal disputes, political transitions in Guinea, and logistical challenges associated with construction.

Rio Tinto, a key player in the project, has committed to investing $6.2bn to realise the potential of Simandou, underscoring its significance in the global mining landscape.

The successful conclusion of the financing agreements marks a pivotal moment for Guinea and its aspirations to leverage its vast mineral resources for economic development and industrial growth.
