IN Zambia, a groundbreaking service named ‘Ask Viamo Anything’ is changing the game, allowing users to access a wealth of information through the power of artificial intelligence (AI). This innovative platform combines the sophistication of ChatGPT, Alexa, and Siri with targeted expertise from organisations like UNICEF, bridging the gap between technology and underserved communities.
David McAfee, CEO and Co-founder of Viamo, articulates the broader vision behind the initiative, stating, ‘Generative AI shouldn’t just help lawyers in LA do their job 10 percent better. As a species, we should have a more ambitious goal for the transformative potential of technology.’
With a focus on accessibility, ‘Ask Viamo Anything’ introduces a user-friendly interface that transcends traditional AI interactions. McAfee elaborates on the service’s approach, highlighting, ‘While most ChatGPT users type their requests into a small box – a barrier for many in communities with low literacy rates – Viamo converts voice to text and back to voice in real time.’
Viamo’s commitment to inclusivity extends beyond technological advancements. The platform leverages voice calls, ensuring accessibility for individuals with limited internet access. McAfee emphasises the significance, noting, ‘By using basic voice calls as the interface, the Viamo platform is accessible to more people than can currently log onto Facebook, Instagram or Tiktok.’
As a for-profit social enterprise, Viamo is driven by a mission to empower underserved communities. McAfee shares insights into the company’s ethos, stating, ‘Combining AI and mobile is the necessary solution to bring the next billion people online. For the first time, people in emerging markets can benefit from technology at the same time as the Global North.’
Viamo’s expansion plans signal a broader commitment to democratising access to information. McAfee outlines the roadmap, revealing, ‘Following its successful pilot project running in Zambia since May, ‘Ask Viamo Anything’ is being rolled out as an Urdu service in Pakistan and in Hindi for India, along with an English service for Nigeria and in Swahili for Tanzania in the first half of 2024.’
With women and girls comprising a majority of users in Zambia, Viamo prioritises sensitivity and relevance in its responses. McAfee underscores the importance of cultural context, stating, ‘Manual review processes guarantee the reliability and relevance of responses, fostering trust among users.’
Through strategic partnerships and innovative approaches, Viamo is spearheading a new era of technology-driven empowerment in emerging markets. By democratising access to AI and information, ‘Ask Viamo Anything’ is poised to transform lives and communities, one query at a time.
