IN a significant diplomatic milestone, the Embassy of Ukraine was officially inaugurated in Gaborone, Botswana, on April 16, 2024, marking a pivotal moment for bilateral relations between the two nations.
The opening ceremony was graced by notable dignitaries including Maksym Subkh, Special Representative of Ukraine on Middle East and Africa, and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Botswana, Liubov Abravitova. Dr. Lemogang Kwape, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Botswana, served as the honorary guest at the event.
Expressing optimism about the diplomatic mission, Maksym Subkh highlighted the importance of closer interaction between Ukraine and Botswana on global initiatives. He emphasised, ‘The establishment of the Ukrainian Diplomatic Mission in Gaborone will allow seamless and effective coordination between our countries on significant international issues.’
Ambassador Liubov Abravitova underscored the need to strengthen ties between Ukraine and Botswana across various sectors. She emphasised the prospects of enhanced cooperation, particularly in engaging with international institutions, which will now be more fruitful and effective with the presence of the new Embassy.
Minister Lemogang Kwape of Botswana stressed the significance of Ukraine’s diplomatic presence in Botswana, foreseeing a new era of bilateral cooperation across diverse fields of mutual interest.
During the ceremony, Minister Lemogang Kwape was briefed on Ukraine’s resilience amid Russian attacks on critical infrastructure. He received a personal letter from Ukraine’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, and an invitation to join President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula.
The opening of the Ukrainian Embassy in Botswana signifies a commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties and fostering mutual understanding between the two nations on the global stage.
