SOUTH African Airways (SAA), the pride of South Africa’s skies, is all set for a triumphant return. After enduring a tumultuous journey, the national carrier is making a remarkable comeback, with its official relaunch scheduled for this week in Cape Town. But that’s not all – SAA is also spreading its wings to São Paulo, Brazil, with a new route that promises to bridge continents.
Resumption of São Paulo flights
The reintroduction of direct flights to São Paulo marks a significant milestone in SAA’s resurgence. Following its revival, SAA is thrilled to announce its first intercontinental flight. The São Paulo flights are scheduled to operate four times a week, with two flights departing from Cape Town and two from Johannesburg. The inaugural flight from Cape Town to São Paulo is slated for October 31, 2023, while Johannesburg will follow suit on November 6, 2023. Travellers and aviation enthusiasts alike can now look forward to seamless connections between South Africa and the bustling city of São Paulo.
The remarkable journey of SAA
SAA’s return to the skies has been nothing short of extraordinary. The airline’s path to recovery began amidst severe adversity. In 2017, allegations of corruption and mismanagement pushed the airline to the brink, ultimately leading to its declaration of bankruptcy in December 2019. The financial turbulence only escalated with the onset of the global pandemic, compelling the South African government to cease its financial support to the beleaguered carrier.
As a result, in December 2020, SAA suspended its services and embarked on a rigorous business rescue process. It was a long and arduous journey, but in June 2021, the government granted approval for the sale of a 51 percent stake to a group of investors known as the Takatso Consortium. This pivotal decision paved the way for SAA’s emergence from bankruptcy in September 2021. During the 16-month grounding period, the airline made tough but necessary decisions, including route cutbacks and a reduction of its workforce by approximately 1,000 employees to control operational costs.
Now, with regulatory approval in place, the finalisation of the acquisition by Takatso is imminent. South African Airways is poised to rise again, showcasing resilience, adaptability, and a bright future in the skies. The return of this iconic national carrier is a testament to what determination and strategic reforms can achieve. Welcome aboard the new era of South African Airways.
