SOUTH African President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered a resolute pledge on Friday, emphasising his country’s unwavering commitment to securing the right to self-determination for Palestinians. The commitment comes in the aftermath of the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) order for Israel to take decisive measures to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza.
In a televised address, Ramaphosa expressed hope that the ICJ’s order would pave the way for resolving the crisis in the Palestinian enclave. Despite criticism, Ramaphosa asserted that, having experienced apartheid, South Africa could not stand idly by in the face of unfolding atrocities.
The ICJ’s order also mandates Israel to take immediate and effective actions for basic services and humanitarian aid in Gaza. However, a cease-fire was not explicitly ordered. South Africa filed the lawsuit on December 29, seeking an injunction against Israel for violating the Genocide Convention with its attacks on Gaza.
Ramaphosa underscored the need for concerted efforts toward a cease-fire and negotiations for a two-state solution. He emphasised, ‘Never again that acts of genocide will be perpetrated with impunity,’ stressing the importance of holding perpetrators accountable.
In a Foreign Ministry statement, South Africa reiterated its commitment to preserving the existence of the Palestinian people, ending apartheid, and advocating for their collective right to self-determination. The statement echoed Nelson Mandela’s words: ‘Our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.’ South Africa remains dedicated to justice for Gaza and a permanent resolution for the two states to coexist. #PalestinianRights #ICJOrder #SouthAfricaSolidarity
