NIGERIA’S anti-drug agency on Sunday announced the seizure of 47 cartons of fake tramadol, comprising 2.3 million tablets, in a recent operation in the northwest state of Kaduna.
One person has been arrested in connection with the seizure of the fake painkillers during an operation by the drug enforcement agency along an expressway in Kaduna, said Femi Babafemi, a spokesman for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in a statement.
Babafemi said the suspect was also found with nearly 3,000 bottles of codeine-containing cough syrup, which was banned by the Nigerian government in 2018 because of concern about misuse and addiction in the country.
According to local media, a 2020 survey by Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics identified that 14.3 million Nigerians, equivalent to 14.4 percent of the population between the ages of 15 and 64 had abused drugs.
