NAMIBIAN President Hage Geingob is set to undergo cancer treatment in the United States, the presidency announced on Wednesday. A routine medical check-up uncovered the 82-year old head of state’s cancer diagnosis earlier this month, prompting the decision to seek novel therapy in Los Angeles, California.
While details about Geingob’s condition remain undisclosed, the presidency confirmed his acceptance of an offer from scientists and medical professionals for specialised cancer treatment. President Geingob, who successfully battled prostate cancer in 2014 during his tenure as prime minister, has entrusted Vice President Nangolo Mumba with presidential duties in his absence.
The president’s expected return on February 2 aligns with Vice President Mumba’s temporary assumption of leadership responsibilities. Namibia, facing presidential and parliamentary elections at the end of 2024, will navigate political developments in Geingob’s absence, emphasising the significance of his medical journey amid the upcoming electoral timeline.
