ON International Women’s Day on Friday, President Yoweri Museveni delivered a compelling message to women across Uganda, urging them to actively engage in the money economy as a pathway to poverty alleviation within their households. Museveni emphasised the importance of women’s involvement in wealth creation endeavours, envisioning a future where they play an equal role in both economic and political spheres.
President Museveni advocated for the adoption of the four-acre farming model, a strategic initiative aimed at ending food insecurity, enhancing livelihoods, and maximising land productivity. According to Museveni, this model presents a viable solution for defeating poverty through commercial agriculture, providing a structured framework for land utilisation and diversified farming activities.
‘The four-acre model offers a blueprint for sustainable farming practices,’ remarked President Museveni. ‘By cultivating crops such as coffee, fruits, pastures, and food crops on designated acres, households can generate substantial income and improve their standard of living.’
Vice President Jessica Alupo echoed Museveni’s sentiments during her address in eastern Uganda, highlighting the government’s commitment to advancing women’s rights and opportunities. Alupo expressed optimism for future progress, acknowledging the transformative changes witnessed over the years.
‘While challenges persist, we have made significant strides in promoting gender equality and empowering women,’ stated Vice President Alupo. ‘Uganda has emerged as a beacon of progress in gender parity, with notable representation of women in key leadership positions.’
Indeed, Uganda ranks among the top-performing countries in terms of gender parity in leadership roles, with substantial representation of women in the cabinet and parliament. The Global Gender Gap Report 2022 confirms Uganda’s progress, with nearly 50 percent of women serving in the cabinet and parliamentary representation exceeding the global average.
President Museveni’s call to action resonates deeply, underscoring the imperative of women’s economic empowerment and their pivotal role in shaping a prosperous future for the nation.
