RENOWNED Ghanaian-American comedian and actor, Michael Blackson (pictured), brought humour to the forefront as he playfully announced that the ability to cook authentic Ghana jollof rice is a prerequisite for his future wife. This amusing revelation took place during an interview at the first-anniversary celebration of his school in Agona Nsaba in Ghana’s Central Region.
In a tongue-in-cheek manner, Blackson emphasised the importance of a potential wife’s skill in preparing Ghanaian jollof rice as the key to winning his heart. Jollof rice, a one-pot dish combining rice, tomatoes, onions, and a blend of spices, holds a special place in the culinary traditions of many African countries. Blackson even shared a humorous anecdote about his housekeeper, whose exceptional jollof cooking skills almost made her his wife, underscoring his deep appreciation for the dish.
The comedian also touched on the ‘Jollof wars,’ a playful culinary rivalry between West African nations, particularly Nigeria and Ghana, over who prepares the superior version of the dish. While Blackson did not take sides in this lighthearted debate, his preference for Ghana jollof was evident.
While Blackson’s comments were made in jest, they shed light on the cultural significance of Jollof rice in African populations. It remains unclear whether this culinary criterion is a genuine deal-breaker for him in his search for a life partner. Nevertheless, his humorous take on marital preferences has added a playful and entertaining element to the conversation.
