META Platforms, the parent company of WhatsApp, has unveiled a new broadcasting feature called Channels, enabling users to receive video and news updates from official accounts while keeping their phone numbers private.
In a blog post, Meta Platforms explained that the Channels feature will be housed in an updates tab, where users can access media from accounts they choose to follow. Once launched, users will be able to view news, videos, polls, and stickers. Similar services already exist for content creators and official accounts across various social media platforms.
With a focus on privacy, Meta Platforms aims to create the most secure broadcast service available by keeping the phone numbers of users and channel creators private. The service will function as a one-way broadcast tool, allowing content providers to block screenshots and the forwarding of their material.
To facilitate easy account discovery, Meta Platforms is developing a search directory, enabling users to find and follow desired accounts. Additionally, official channels will be accessible through invitation links.
The initial launch of the Channels feature will take place in Colombia and Singapore, although specific dates have not been disclosed. A broader rollout is expected ‘over the coming months.’
Meta Platforms’ introduction of the Channels feature on WhatsApp reflects its commitment to enhancing user experience and privacy. By offering a private broadcasting tool, users can stay informed and engaged without compromising their personal information.
