IN 2010, Ghana joined the ranks of oil-producing countries in Africa with a projected output of 120,000 barrels per day. This greatly elevated hopes among Ghanaians, but also sparked fears of a ‘Nigerian scenario’ in which oil becomes a problem rather than a solution.
‘Given the trajectory of some oil and gas producing countries’ experience with the “resource curse phenomenon”, one wonders whether Ghana as a developing country will be able to escape a similar fate with its new found oil wealth,’ says Mena Abaffoe Yalley, a doctoral researcher and lecturer at the University of East London.
To deliberate and shed light on this, some researchers at the university, led by Yalley, are organising a two-day conference to debate and explore how Ghana can avoid the resource curse phenomenon through its Petroleum Revenue Management Regime.
This two-day conference will provide a platform for experts, stakeholders, researchers, private sector organisations, NGOs and the public to discuss and explore avenues on the efficient management and exploitation of Ghana’s oil and gas resources as a key contributor to the country’s socio- economic development.
Among the speakers at the conference are Alex Mould, former CEO of the state-owned Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, John Darko, senior legal consultant supervising the drafting of Ghana National Gas Act for Ghana’s Gas Industry.
Others are Nana Tetrete Okuamoah Sekyim II, Paramount Chief of Wassa Amenfi Traditional Area in the Western Region of Ghana, Justice Dr. Richmond Osei-Hwere, a Justice of the Ghana High Court with expertise in Oil & Gas Law and Adjunct lecturer at Faculty of Law, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Rainier Akumperigya, a law lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) School of Law and Dr. Eddy Wifa, a lecturer at Nottingham Law School and Director for the African Natural Resources and Energy Law Network.
