GHANAIANS are rallying behind calls for greater government investment in sporting infrastructure following the nation’s remarkable showing at the recently concluded 13th African Games held in Accra, the capital city.
Fans and spectators lauded the achievements of Ghanaian athletes during the Games, expressing pride and joy in their remarkable feats on the international stage.
Theophilus Atseku, a physical education teacher at a local high school, emphasised the abundance of talent in the country and stressed the importance of providing adequate infrastructure to nurture and develop these talents.
‘I’m truly impressed by the performance of our athletes during the 13th African Games. The government’s provision of infrastructure for hosting the competition was commendable,’ Atseku told Xinhua news agency. He further advocated for substantial investment in sports equipment and infrastructure nationwide to harness the potential of budding talents.
Beauty Amenyo, an avid spectator of the Games’ swimming events, echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the need for expanded investment in sports facilities beyond the capital. She highlighted the positive impact such investments could have in fostering national pride and joy through sports.
Isaac Antwi, a passionate sports enthusiast, called for a comprehensive government strategy to bolster sports infrastructure in various cities across Ghana. He stressed the importance of decentralising resources to unearth and nurture talents beyond the confines of Accra.
Ghana’s stellar performance at the 13th African Games, where the nation secured 19 gold, 29 silver, and 20 bronze medals, marked a historic achievement, signalling the country’s potential in the sporting arena. This success has reignited public fervour for increased investment in sports infrastructure to sustain and build upon this momentum in nurturing future generations of athletes.
As Ghanaians celebrate their athletes’ triumphs, there is a collective call for the government to prioritise the development of sporting infrastructure nationwide, ensuring that raw talents are identified, nurtured, and given the platform to excel on both the continental and global stage.
