THE vibrant neighbourhood of Camberwell is set to host the south London Borough of Southwark’s first-ever Ghanaian Akwasidae festival, organised by the Southwark Black Parents Forum. Taking place on Sunday, July 16 at Camberwell Green Park, this historic event promises a delightful blend of traditional food, captivating entertainment, and pulsating Afrobeats music.
The Akwasidae Festival holds immense cultural significance as it is celebrated by the people of the Ashanti region in Ghana. Serving as a religious tribute to past leaders, heroes, and the illustrious Ashanti royal lineage, the festival showcases Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.
Tyreece Asamoah, the festival’s director, expressed his excitement about the upcoming event, saying, ‘There will be an array of Ghanaian Kings and Queens there from all over the UK. Traditional rites will be performed.’ The ceremony involves spirited drumming, vibrant dancing, soulful singing, and the presentation of food offerings as a way to honour personal and community ancestors.
The festival also aims to strengthen the cultural connection between the United Kingdom and Ghana, as highlighted by the organisers: ‘From the Azonto to Stormzy, Ghana and Ghanaians have been at the forefront of popular culture, and this festival is another addition to the cultural connection between the UK and Ghana.’
Attendees can expect a wide range of entertainment, including awe-inspiring acrobatic performances and electrifying music from Afrobeats artist, Article Wan. For the younger audience, there will be free face painters, engaging arts and crafts activities, and interactive tech sessions provided by Busybee.
Food enthusiasts will be delighted by the presence of renowned food vendors such as Mozah, Fourth Garden, and Harbourview, who will cater the event, offering tantalizing Ghanaian cuisine.
The Akwasidae Festival is open to all and completely free of charge. Organizers urge the community not to miss out on this remarkable celebration of Ghanaian culture.
