THE football world is in mourning following the tragic death of former Ghanaian striker Raphael Dwamena, who collapsed during an Albanian Super League match on Saturday.
The Albanian Football Federation officially confirmed the passing of the 28-year-old player after footage circulated on social media, showing Dwamena collapsing on the field during the 24th minute of the match between his team, Egnatia, and Partizani. Despite immediate medical intervention by fellow players, the federation sadly announced, ‘the player unfortunately passed away,’ The British Daily Mail newspaper reported.
Dwamena, who was the top scorer of the current season in the Albanian Super League with nine goals, had a notable career that included eight appearances for the Ghana national team, where he scored twice.
The Ghana Football Association released an official statement expressing deep condolences to Dwamena’s family. No specific details regarding the cause of his death were provided by the Albanian federation. However, local media reports highlighted the player’s past heart problems, including a 2021 game with Austria’s Blau-Veis Linz that led to his hospitalisation.
Dwamena’s football journey spanned various countries, including Spain, Denmark, and Switzerland. Spanish clubs Levante and Zaragoza, where Dwamena had previously played, expressed their condolences. Levante stated, ‘Our thoughts are with his family and his loved ones in these difficult moments. His legacy in our club will last forever.’ Similarly, Zaragoza expressed devastation and remembered Dwamena in the memory of their fans, saying, ‘Rest in peace.’
The Brazilian coach of the Albanian national team, Sylvinho, also took to social media, saying, ‘Rest in peace. Condolences to family and friends.’ The football community reflects on the loss of a talented player and extends sympathies to Dwamena’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
