IN a devastating incident on Friday, a massive explosion at a gas company in Nairobi has resulted in the loss of two lives and left more than 200 individuals injured, according to Kenyan authorities.
Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura expressed deep regret, stating, ‘Two fellow Kenyans have regrettably lost their lives while being attended to at the Nairobi West Hospital.’ Additionally, Mwaura reported that 222 others sustained injuries from the fire and have been swiftly transported to various hospitals for urgent medical attention.
The flames from the explosion spread to nearby residential houses, catching residents off guard and causing further distress. The impact of the blast was so intense that it extended over 10 kilometres, causing extensive damage to cars and buildings, according to official reports.
Eyewitnesses, such as John Mwangi from Embakasi, shared harrowing accounts of the incident. ‘I heard this deafening blast, and when I rushed outside, I saw a huge ball of fire resembling a mushroom cloud, stretching over 100 meters high. Despite being cold, I could feel the heat,’ Mwangi recounted to Anadolu news agency.
As the affected community grapples with the aftermath, authorities are actively investigating the exact cause of the explosion. The incident has sent shockwaves throughout Nairobi, prompting concerns about safety measures and protocols within gas-related industries.
