A TRAGIC incident unfolded in Nigeria’s Oyo state as at least two people lost their lives, and dozens were injured in an explosion caused by stored explosives at a private residence, according to Governor Seyi Makinde on Wednesday.
The impact of the blast on Tuesday was witnessed by Reuters, revealing collapsed houses and wrecked cars, prompting panicked residents to flood the streets. In Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state, about 130 km from Lagos, emergency services and security officials utilised bulldozers in a search and rescue operation, clearing debris in the affected neighbourhood.
The aftermath of the explosion left several houses with blown-off roofs and shattered windows. Distraught homeowners watched as officials worked diligently to locate survivors. Police cordoned off the blast site, where a significant crater was visible from a distance.
Survivor Olaitan Okanlawon recounted the terrifying experience, stating, ‘I was in the house with my kids, and I just saw the ceiling and roof coming down on us. I have a lot of injuries, including my back.’ Okanlawon sought refuge in a hotel with her children and returned to collect belongings from her damaged house.
Governor Seyi Makinde, in a statement, confirmed two deaths and disclosed that 77 individuals were treated for injuries, with most already discharged. Preliminary investigations by security agencies pointed to illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija as the culprits, storing explosive devices that caused the blast.
In response to the tragedy, Governor Makinde assured that the state government would provide temporary accommodation for those who lost their homes, offering support to those affected by the devastating explosion. The incident sheds light on the dangers of illegal activities and underscores the need for increased safety measures in residential areas
