FORMER Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has partnered with global soccer players union FIFPRO and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to raise awareness about the risks of fake agents preying on soccer players in Africa. Drogba, through his foundation, aims to educate players about the dangers associated with trusting the wrong individuals who promise fame and fortune.
In an animated campaign video, Drogba urges players to be cautious and discerning when it comes to placing their trust. He warns, ‘Be very careful who you trust. Never trust the person who wants your money.’ FIFPRO conducted a survey among 263 players from seven African countries, revealing that more than 70 percent of them were contacted unsolicited by individuals promising assistance in switching clubs.
The most common offers made to players were trials (43 percent) or contracts with clubs (39 percent). However, 56 percent of the players did not receive the promised trial, and 44 percent did not sign the expected contract. FIFPRO warns that many players have found themselves stranded abroad without the means to return home, illustrating the less glamorous reality behind the false promises.
Drogba stresses the vulnerability of young players who are eager to secure representation. He advises, ‘Your best agent is not the guy you may trust, the best agent you can have is your performances.’ Drogba emphasises that exceptional performances on the field are what attract the attention of clubs and reputable agents.
To combat the issue, FIFA has implemented new regulations that require every soccer agent to hold a FIFA license as of October 1, 2023, which necessitates passing an examination.
The campaign launched by Drogba, FIFPRO, and the ILO includes a pamphlet providing practical advice to players. It offers guidance on identifying fake agents, understanding contract terms, and clarifying players’ rights as foreign employees.
Drogba highlights the stories of fellow players who fell victim to fraudulent agents, sharing how they lost their entire family savings and were left stranded or even imprisoned. He urges players not to be the next victims of such scams.
As one of the most successful African players in Premier League history, Drogba’s involvement in this campaign aims to protect aspiring players from exploitation. His illustrious career, scoring 164 goals for Chelsea and winning numerous titles, lends credibility to his message of caution and vigilance.
