NIGERIAN musician Burna Boy is set to make history in July by becoming the first Nigerian artist to headline a US stadium. The news was exclusively announced by Billboard earlier this month. Burna Boy’s show at NYC’s Citi Field on July 8 will mark a major stadium date in his Love, Damini world tour, which includes future stops in Paris, London, and Amsterdam.
The Citi Field stop is produced by Live Nation and falls on the first anniversary of Burna Boy’s most recent album, Love, Damini. The album peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s World Albums chart and received a 2023 Grammy nomination for best global music album.
This is not the first time Burna Boy has made history in the US. Last April, he became the first Nigerian act to headline Madison Square Garden for his concert, ‘Burna Boy Presents One Night in Space.’
Burna Boy has a busy few months ahead of him, with performances at Dreamville Music Festival in North Carolina, Coachella, Afro Nation Miami, and co-headlining the 2023 UEFA Champions League Final Kick Off Show by Pepsi in Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium.
Burna Boy told Billboard in a previous interview, ‘It has always been my vision to build a bridge between all Black people in all parts of the world through the music and performance. Music is the No. 1 messenger.’ His upcoming US stadium performance is a significant step towards realising that vision.
