BRITISH Airways (BA), the UK’s flag carrier, is set to strengthen its connections between Britain and Ghana by adding three weekly return flights. Starting from October 29, BA will launch flights between London Gatwick (LGW) and Accra, providing enhanced travel options and additional choices for Ghanaian passengers.
‘We are thrilled to offer this new service, further solidifying the strong relationship between the UK and Ghana,’ said the spokesperson for British Airways. ‘As a Commonwealth country, Ghana holds a special place for us, and we have been connecting the two nations for over 85 years.’
The new service will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, linking London and Accra Kotoka International Airport (ACC), Ghana’s main international hub. Departing from LGW at midday, the flights will arrive in Accra at 18:35, while the return flights will depart at 21:20, reaching London at 04:00 the following day.
BA will deploy its Boeing 777 aircraft with economy, premium economy, and business classes, providing passengers with a range of travel options. The South Terminal at Gatwick offers an alternative London gateway for Ghanaian expatriates and UK holidaymakers.
‘We are excited to restore our Africa network and expand our presence in the region,’ stated British Airways’ Head of Sales for Africa, Middle East, and South Asia. ‘Accra was one of the routes that showed potential for growth, and we believe there is a strong market demand in Africa.’
Passengers on these flights will have the opportunity to witness the new British Airways uniform, designed by British-Ghanaian Savile Row fashion designer Ozwald Boateng. This newly unveiled uniform, the first in 20 years, will be worn by the crew, pilots, and check-in agents on the LGW-ACC route.
The new flights from Gatwick will complement British Airways’ well-established service between Accra and London Heathrow Airport (LHR). Operating daily Airbus A350 flights, the airline provides additional options for travellers. Flights between Heathrow and Accra depart at 12:45, arriving at 18:25, with return flights departing at 22:25 and arriving at 06:15 the next day.
With this expansion, British Airways aims to enhance passenger and cargo capacity, benefiting Ghanaian exporters who can swiftly transport perishables and other goods through IAG cargo, the cargo division of BA’s parent company.
Passengers traveling beyond Europe can enjoy British Airways’ dedicated economy class, known as World Traveller, offering affordable prices and unique services. For those seeking premium comfort and exclusive perks, the airline provides a long-haul business class called Club World.
To celebrate the new service, British Airways will offer launch specials, with fares starting from $689 in World Traveller and $2,947 in Club World. Given the high number of Ghanaians traveling to the UK annually, the route is expected to experience significant demand, particularly during the festive season.
