IN a significant move aimed at bolstering local content initiatives in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kibali, Africa’s largest gold mine, has forged a collaborative partnership with the Autorite de Regulation de la Sous-Traisance dans le Secteur Prive (ARSP). This strategic alliance underscores Kibali’s commitment to leveraging Congolese contractors and suppliers, aligning with parent company Barrick’s overarching goal of nurturing local businesses and prioritising the employment of host country nationals.
Highlighting the importance of this collaboration, Miguel Kashal Katemb, CEO of ARSP, expressed his support, stating, ‘We encourage Kibali to continue this policy to enhance the considerable contribution it already makes to the local as well as the wider Congolese economy.’
Mark Bristow, President and Chief Executive of Barrick, applauded Kibali’s proactive approach towards supporting local businesses, emphasising the significance of the mine’s local procurement policy. He remarked, ‘Since it went into operation in 2009, Kibali has transformed the previously disadvantaged northeastern corner of the country into a flourishing commercial hub. We will continue to drive sustainable value creation through our partnerships here.’
Bristow further underscored Kibali’s pivotal role in fostering economic and social development in the region, noting, ‘The mine has been a champion of economic and social development in the region and has actively mentored the growth of small local enterprises into substantial business, by enhancing their commercial and technical skills, and providing them with the opportunities to exercise these.’
Kibali’s commitment to empowering local communities is exemplified by its dedication to nurturing local talent and businesses. Notably, the mine’s workforce comprises 95 percent Congolese nationals out of more than 6,500 employees, demonstrating its steadfast commitment to local employment and economic empowerment.
As Kibali and ARSP embark on this collaborative journey, they aim to further solidify their roles as drivers of economic growth and prosperity in the DRC. Through sustained efforts and partnerships, they strive to create lasting impacts, paving the way for sustainable development and the empowerment of local communities.
