IN a resounding call for collaboration, filmmakers from across Africa have convened in Ghana for the inaugural African Cinema Summit, aiming to harness the continent’s rich cultural tapestry and propel growth within the cinematic industry.

Edward Moukala, the head of UNESCO Accra office, emphasised the significance of this initiative, stating, ‘It’s time for Africa to assert its voice on the global cinema stage. Let us foster collaboration, share resources, and unite in our commitment to creating a vibrant African film industry.’

The 3-day summit in Accra on November 17, delved into the intricacies, challenges, and opportunities within the African cinematic space. Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante, filmmaker and CEO of Ghana’s National Film Authority, highlighted the potential of African cinema on the global stage, emphasising the need to tell stories that resonate.

‘We’re telling local filmmakers that your content cannot survive only in Ghana. For your film to do well, you need to tell a story that resonates, and a good story is a good story,’ Asante affirmed.

Africa’s film and audiovisual businesses currently generate about $5bn annually, a figure that could potentially reach $20bn and create 20 million jobs, according to UNESCO. President Akufo Addo recognizes the transformative power of a thriving film industry for sustainable development across African nations.

‘I believe it’s not beyond us collectively in Africa to produce such statistics, and the availability of the right skill set is critical to this end,’ President Akufo Addo stated.

Ghana, with its ‘Shoot in Ghana’ campaign, has been actively promoting itself as a movie location. Recent reports indicate British actor Idris Elba’s commitment to shooting part of his next film in the country.

Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante emphasised the global impact of African stories, stating, ‘Those who lose out are not just Africans; it is the global community, because the global community will be more enriched by African stories playing out.’

As investments and collaborations increase, the African film industry stands poised to capture the essence of its diverse stories, drive economic progress, and pave the way for a sustainable future.
