IN response to a severe diplomatic incident involving the assault of two international staff by Ethiopian security agents, the African Development Bank (AfDB) lodged a formal complaint with the government of Ethiopia. Despite a high-level mission’s visit in November 2023, concerns persisted about the safety and rights of the Bank’s personnel, leading to the withdrawal of all international staff from Ethiopia.
To address the matter, President Akinwumi Adesina personally visited Addis Ababa, engaging in fruitful meetings with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed from December 29 to 31, 2023. Subsequently, the prime minister extended formal apologies, assuring the Bank of security, respect for rights and diplomatic immunities, and commitment to investigate the incident and missing funds.
The government pledged full cooperation in sharing the investigation report and ensuring accountability. The African Development Bank, pleased with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s leadership, will resume normal operations in Ethiopia, with international staff returning.
The Bank expressed gratitude to the public, international community, shareholders, and its staff for support. Anticipating a renewed partnership, the African Development Bank looks forward to strengthening ties with the government of Ethiopia, emphasising their longstanding relationship and the resumption of projects totalling $1.24bn.
