CELINA Lee, Co-Founder and CEO of Zindi, Africa’s largest network of data scientists, has highlighted the critical role of AI workforce development in shaping Africa’s future. Speaking at the recent AI Action Summit in
Paris, Lee joined industry leaders such as Google’s Senior VP for Research, James Manyika, and BCG’s Senior Partner, Sylvian Duranton, to discuss the impact of artificial intelligence on the global job market.
Upskilling AI talent in Africa
Lee underscored the importance of strategic investments in AI education, particularly in Africa, where AI-driven jobs are emerging rapidly. ‘The AI revolution is opening up two distinct areas for upskilling,’ she explained. ‘Firstly, professionals in sectors like call centres, marketing, and sales need training to integrate AI tools into their work. Secondly, there is a growing demand for AI developers—those creating these solutions—who require specialised training and support.’
Zindi AWS IRCAI Challenge: a game-changer
To bridge Africa’s AI skills gap, Zindi recently launched the Zindi AWS IRCAI Global Challenge. This initiative, backed by AWS, IRCAI, African governments, and local AI communities, aims to provide emerging AI practitioners with training, mentorship, and funding to develop AI solutions that address real-world African challenges.
‘In Africa, software so
lutions are often not adapted to local needs,’ Lee noted. ‘The best way to address this is by ensuring that those designing AI solutions come from and understand these communities.’
