THE future of Ghana’s largest airline is up in the air now that its parent, Hainan-based HNA Group, has effectively buckled under the weight of almost $100bn of debt and widespread reports of embezzlement.
Under a restructuring plan, the government announced HNA’s non-aviation assets would be sold but it’s not clear if that also includes Africa World Airlines given that it’s one of the only non-Chinese airlines in the ailing company’s portfolio.
The Accra-based carrier was in trouble even before HNA was forced into bankruptcy. Like other carriers, the airline was forced to close for most of last year due to Covid-19 and had just resumed some international routes last September.
