With billions of monthly active users, the popular messaging platform has finally introduced a new Chat feature that eliminates the need to store someone’s number in your phonebook before initiating a conversation.
Previously, WhatsApp users faced difficulties when trying to message an unsaved contact on the platform. However, the latest update resolves this problem by providing a straightforward solution. To initiate a chat with an unknown number, users can start a new chat on the platform and simply type the number in the search bar. A Chat button will then appear next to the number, allowing users to begin a conversation without the need to store the contact details.
According to WABetaInfo, a reliable source for WhatsApp updates, the new feature is already available on the latest WhatsApp build for both iPhone and Android devices. Users have confirmed its functionality on various smartphones, such as the Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, it is worth noting that the feature is not yet accessible on WhatsApp’s desktop app.
In addition to the new Chat feature, WhatsApp has been observed working on @username support, which will further enhance the ease of connecting with new contacts. Once implemented, users will be able to initiate chats without even knowing the phone number, relying solely on usernames.
If the Chat button does not appear for some users, WhatsApp advises updating to the latest build available on the Play Store. However, as this is a server-side rollout from Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, it may take some time for the feature to be accessible to all users.
