Keypoints:

  • WhatsApp introduces voice and video messages for missed calls
  • New Status stickers and animated photos boost creative sharing
  • Meta AI upgrades enhance image creation and chat experiences

WHATSAPP has rolled out a fresh set of features designed to make calls, chats and Status updates more interactive, creative and useful, as the Meta-owned messaging platform sharpens its focus on everyday communication. The updates, announced by WhatsApp in a blog post, are being released globally in phases across Android, iOS and desktop platforms.

‘Missed calls no longer mean missed messages’

One of the most notable changes is the introduction of missed call messages, a feature that allows users to leave a voice or video note if their call is not answered. Instead of relying on traditional voicemail systems, users can now tap a new option after a missed call to record a short message that appears directly in the chat thread.

According to WhatsApp, voice calls allow voice notes, while video calls support short video messages, making follow-ups more personal and immediate. The company said the feature is aimed at users who want to explain why they called or share context without having to redial.

‘Calls become more expressive’

WhatsApp is also upgrading the calling experience with new real-time reactions during voice chats. Participants can now respond using emojis such as applause or cheers without interrupting the speaker. For group video calls, a new automatic speaker highlight function places a visual focus on whoever is talking, helping users follow conversations more easily in larger calls.

These improvements reflect WhatsApp’s growing push to compete more directly with video-first platforms while keeping its interface simple and familiar.

‘Status gets more playful’

Status updates are receiving a creative boost through new interactive stickers. Users can now add prompts, questions and music-based stickers that invite responses from viewers. Some templates include lyric-style text and playful layouts designed to encourage engagement rather than passive viewing.

Channel admins are also gaining new tools, including the ability to ask questions directly within Channels, making it easier to gather feedback or spark discussion among followers.

‘Meta AI steps up’

Artificial intelligence plays a larger role in this update. WhatsApp has enhanced its Meta AI image tools, integrating improved models that generate higher-quality visuals users can share in chats or Status posts. The company says these upgrades are aimed at making AI-generated images more realistic and expressive.

Another new feature allows users to turn still photos into short animated clips, adding motion and personality to everyday images without leaving the app. These animations can be shared like regular videos.

‘Desktop experience streamlined’

For users on Mac, Windows and WhatsApp Web, the platform is introducing a redesigned media hub that brings documents, links and shared media into a single, searchable space. This makes it easier to locate files in long-running conversations, particularly for work or group chats.

WhatsApp has also refreshed how links appear in chats, improving previews so they take up less space while remaining easy to recognise.

Why it matters

Taken together, the updates signal WhatsApp’s effort to balance simplicity with richer expression, particularly as messaging apps increasingly compete on creativity and AI features. By embedding these tools directly into everyday actions like missed calls and Status updates, WhatsApp is betting that users want smarter communication without added complexity.

The company said the new features are rolling out gradually and will become available to all users over the coming weeks.
