THE United States on Thursday imposed sanctions on five current and former Ugandan officials, citing their alleged involvement in significant corruption and gross violations of human rights.
Among those designated is Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, accused of ‘significant corruption tied to her leadership of Uganda’s Parliament.’ The sanctions list also includes former Minister of Karamoja Affairs Mary Goretti Kitutu, former Minister of State for Karamoja Affairs Agnes Nandutu, and Minister of State for Finance Amos Lugolobi, all accused of corruption.
Peter Elwelu, former deputy chief of the Ugandan Peoples’ Defence Forces, was also sanctioned due to his alleged involvement in ‘gross violations of human rights,’ according to a statement from the US State Department.
The Department further announced visa restrictions for multiple other Ugandan officials for ‘undermining the democratic process and repressing members of marginalised or vulnerable populations in Uganda.’
‘The United States stands with Ugandans advocating for democratic principles, a government that delivers for all its citizens, and accountability for actions committed by those who abuse their position through corruption and gross violations of human rights,’ the State Department stated.
These measures underscore the US commitment to promoting democracy and human rights, while holding individuals accountable for corruption and abuses of power.
