IN a significant development for Senegal’s political landscape, President Macky Sall announced in a nationally televised speech that he will not seek a third term in next year’s election. This decision has been welcomed by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who commended President Sall for his commitment to democratic principles and setting an example for the region.
President Sall’s announcement put an end to weeks of speculation and uncertainty surrounding the possibility of his seeking another term. In his speech on Monday, he emphasised that Senegal is not solely dependent on him but comprises capable individuals who can lead the country to greater heights.
In response to the news, Secretary Blinken issued a statement expressing support for President Sall’s decision. He highlighted the belief that free and fair elections, as well as peaceful transitions of power, contribute to the strength and stability of institutions, leading to more prosperous nations. Secretary Blinken contrasted President Sall’s commitment to democratic principles and respect for term limits with those who undermine these values.
President Sall was initially elected in 2012, defeating incumbent President Abdoulaye Wade, who was seeking a controversial third term. In 2019, Sall secured re-election under a revised constitution that limited presidents to two five-year terms. However, some of his supporters argued that he could run for a third term since his first election was held under the previous constitution.
The speculation surrounding President Sall’s potential bid for a third term sparked nationwide protests last month. Clashes between security forces and supporters of opposition leader Ousmane Sonko resulted in the loss of 16 lives. Sonko himself was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison on sexual assault charges, further exacerbating the tense political climate.
These rumours threatened to tarnish Senegal’s reputation as a symbol of democracy and political stability within the region. West Africa has witnessed leaders disregarding constitutionally mandated term limits to cling to power, making President Sall’s decision a significant affirmation of democratic norms and principles.
