IN response to concerning developments in Niger Republic’s political landscape, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of Nigeria and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of Government, has issued a stern warning to alleged coup plotters. Tinubu emphasised that ECOWAS leadership will not tolerate any actions that undermine the democratically-elected government and the principles of constitutionalism in the region.
‘It should be quite clear to all players in the Republic of Niger that the leadership of the ECOWAS Region and all lovers of democracy around the world will not tolerate any situation that incapacitates the democratically-elected government of the country,’ Tinubu said in statement issued on Wednesday.
Tinubu stated that the ECOWAS leadership stands firmly with the elected government in Niger and is closely monitoring the situation. He pledged to use all available means to ensure that democracy is preserved and thrives in the region.
‘We shall protect our hard-earned democracy in line with the universally acceptable principle of constitutionalism,’ he added.
The warning comes as rumours of alleged coup plots and instability circulate in Niger Republic, raising concerns among regional leaders. Tinubu’s statement sends a strong message of solidarity with the elected government and emphasises ECOWAS’s commitment to defending democratic values in West Africa.
