THE State Minister for Labour in Uganda, Charles Okello Engola, was allegedly shot dead by his own bodyguard on Tuesday, according to a police spokesman.
The incident took place in the minister’s home located on the outskirts of Kampala, the capital city of Uganda. Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, confirmed that the minister was gunned down by his bodyguard. The police have initiated an investigation into the incident, but no further details have been released.
A neighbour of the minister, Thomas Kato, reported that gunshots were heard from the mi
nister’s compound, after which people started shouting that the minister had been shot dead. The motive behind the killing is still unclear, and it is not known if the bodyguard was acting alone or in conjunction with others.
The parliament speaker of Uganda, Anita Among, expressed her grief over the killing and described the incident as ‘unfortunate.’ Engola was a prominent member of the ruling National Resistance Movement party and had been serving as the state minister for labour since June 2016. The tragic incident has shocked the country, and people are awaiting further details about
the investigation into the killing of the minister.
