US President Donald Trump has vowed to halt US f

unding to South Africa, claiming that ‘certain classes of people’ in the country are being treated ‘very badly.’ In a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump alleged that South Africa was seizing land without compensation and promised that the US would take action until the situation was investigated.

‘South Africa is confiscating land and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY,’ Trump wrote. ‘The United States won’t stand for it, we will act. Also, I will be cutting off all future funding to South Africa until a full investigation of this situation has been completed!’

Trump did not provide evidence for his claims, and it remains unclear what prompted his remarks. The South African embassy in Washington, DC has not yet responded to requests for comment, according to Reuters.

US aid to South Africa at risk

According to US government data, the United States allocated nearly $440 million in assistance to South Africa in 2023. The funds support various sectors, including healthcare, economic development, and security cooperation. If Trump follows through with his threat, it could impact key development projects and strain US-South Africa relations.

South Africa currently holds the BRICS presidency, a leadership role within the economic bloc that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The US and South Africa have often had diplomatic disagreements, particularly over Pretoria’s non-aligned foreign policy and growing ties with China and Russia.

Ramaphosa’s response to Trump’s remarks

Despite Trump’s comments, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has downplayed concerns about tensions between Washington and Pretoria.

In December 2024, Ramaphosa stated that he was not worried about US-South Africa relations, adding that he had spoken to Trump after his re-election and looked forward to future cooperation.

‘We have always had a constructive relationship with the US, and we will c

ontinue to work together where our interests align,’ Ramaphosa said.

During Trump’s first term as president, he similarly raised concerns about alleged land seizures and violence against white farmers in South Africa. At the time, Pretoria dismissed Trump’s claims, stating that they were based on misinformation. No formal US investigation into these claims was ever conducted.

Elon Musk’s influence in the debate

Trump’s recent remarks echo sentiments previously expressed by Elon Musk, a South African-born billionaire and a close ally of the president. In 2023, Musk made headlines when he criticized the South African government over its handling of racial and political issues.

Musk responded on X (formerly Twitter) to a viral video showing members of the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) party singing ‘Kill the Boer,’ an old anti-apartheid song.

‘@CyrilRamaphosa, why do you say nothing?’ Musk wrote, accusing the South African government of allowing hate speech against white people to persist.

The video sparked international debate, with some defending the song as a historical anti-apartheid protest chant, while others condemned it as incitement to violence.

Potential diplomatic fallout

Trump’s threat to cut US aid could escalate diplomatic tensions between Washington and Pretoria. South Africa has pursued a non-aligned foreign policy, often engaging with China and Russia, which has caused friction with Western nations.

Analysts believe that Trump’s hardline stance on South Africa may appeal to his conservative base, particularly those concerned with issues of land expropriation and race relations. However, South African officials have not indicated whether they plan to engage with Trump’s administration on this issue.

What happens next?

Trump’s foreign policy stance toward South Africa could become a significant point of contention in US-Africa relations.

If Trump follows through on his pledge to cut funding, it could impact key developmental programmes in healthcare, security, and economic growth. However, it remains to be seen whether his claims about land confiscation will lead to formal action by the US government.

For now, South Africa has not issued an official response, and diplomatic observers will be watching closely to see whether Trump’s latest remarks translate into policy changes in Washington.
