BURKINA Faso’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has announced plans to bring home more than 800 Burkinabè studying Islamic law in Arab countries, while firmly rejecting the introduction of Sharia as the country’s governing legal system.
The remarks have been distorted in some online accounts, which claim Traoré warned the students not to return. The official RTB recording shows the opposite: he said the authorities intended to bring them back and questioned why they had not pursued technical or vocational skills needed by the country.
Official recording clarifies claim
Traoré made the comments on July 16, 2026, during an address to representatives of the Yaadga region. The Presidency of Faso confirmed the meeting took place in Ouahigouya, while state broadcaster RTB published the official recording containing his address.
According to Traoré, the latest figures available to the government indicated that more than 800 young Burkinabè were studying Sharia, Islamic law or religious jurisprudence in Arab countries. He questioned what practical profession they would acquire from those programmes and argued that Burkina Faso needed citizens trained in productive trades and technical fields.
His argument focused on the country’s development needs and the state’s concerns about religious teaching funded or directed from abroad. However, the number remains a figure presented by Traoré. The official material reviewed does not include a student register confirming the total or showing that all those involved are studying in Saudi Arabia.
Students were told to return
The most significant error in the circulating claim is the assertion that Traoré advised the students against coming home. In fact, he announced an intention to bring them back.
He also warned that students who refused to return would no longer be considered Burkinabè. That statement should be reported as a political warning, not as evidence that citizenship has already been withdrawn or that legal proceedings have begun.
The official RTB and Presidency material does not provide a timetable, repatriation procedure or individual list of those affected. It also does not explain how the threatened nationality consequences would be implemented.
Traoré rejects Sharia rule
Traoré said Burkina Faso would not be governed under Sharia and maintained that citizens were free to practise their faith. His stated position was that freedom of worship would remain protected within the country’s existing legal framework.
The intervention comes amid a tightening political environment. Africa Briefing has reported on the government’s rejection of a democratic transition, the dissolution of political parties and speculation involving senior officials and religious critics.
The speech also reflects the security-first approach that has shaped Burkina Faso since Traoré seized power in 2022. His government has placed national sovereignty and state control at the centre of its response to armed Islamist groups, while strengthening regional military cooperation through the Alliance of Sahel States.
Claim is materially misleading
The original account is therefore partly accurate but materially misleading. Traoré did reject Sharia as national law, criticise the choice to study religious law rather than practical skills and defend freedom of worship.
