SENEGAL seized nearly three tons of fake drugs with a street value of CFA 520 million francs (about $850,900) recently, the Customs Communication Service said on Friday.
The seizures were made during a series of operations dubbed ‘Bouclage’ (sealing off) in the country’s coastal and central regions, it said in a statement.
In the first operation, conducted in Joal in west Senegal in late January, authorities confiscated 2,240 kg of fake drugs, including antibiotics, aphrodisiacs, painkillers, fortifiers and injectable vitamins.
The two other operations took place on Thursday at a beach in Mbao, in the suburbs of Dakar, and in Kaffrine, a town in central Senegal.
The customs administration urged the public ‘to be more collaborative and supportive’ in the fight against trafficking in fake medicines, the statement said.
