Keypoints:

  • Gold exports reached about $10.1bn in 2025
  • Saudi firm Sarmady signals investment interest
  • Ouagadougou is demanding greater state participation

BURKINA Faso’s gold export boom is attracting fresh Saudi interest after the metal generated about $10.1bn in overseas sales in 2025, putting the country’s rapidly changing mining sector on the radar of investors seeking exposure to Africa’s mineral wealth.

The interest, however, has not yet produced an investment deal. Saudi company Sarmady Co has been invited to submit a formal proposal to Burkinabè authorities, meaning discussions remain exploratory as Ouagadougou pushes for greater state participation and domestic value creation from its natural resources.

Gold dominates Burkina Faso exports

Burkina Faso’s Directorate General of Customs says gold exports reached CFA5,882.2bn ($10.1bn )in 2025.

Gold generated more than 91 percent of the country’s export earnings during the year, underlining the extraordinary weight of the commodity in the national economy.

Total exports climbed to CFA6,442.2bn from CFA3,421.2bn in 2024, an increase of about 88 percent.

The performance builds on Burkina Faso’s record gold production in 2025 and the government’s drive to capture a greater share of revenues from the sector.

The United Arab Emirates and Switzerland were the main buyers of Burkina Faso’s gold in 2025, accounting for 56.6 percent and 41.4 percent respectively.

Saudi firm opens investment talks

The latest investment interest emerged during an August 30 meeting in Riyadh between Burkina Faso’s ambassador, Boukary Savadogo, and Nouf Ali Alsalaten Al Qhatani, representing Sarmady Co.

According to Burkina Faso’s diplomatic mission in Saudi Arabia, discussions focused on opportunities for investment and partnership in the gold sector.

Sarmady expressed interest and was invited to submit an investment dossier for consideration by the relevant authorities.

No investment value, mining licence, equity stake or specific project has been announced.

That distinction is significant: Sarmady is examining an opportunity rather than entering Burkina Faso’s mining sector through a completed transaction.

Ouagadougou rewrites mining rules

Any eventual Saudi investment would enter a regulatory environment giving the state wider participation rights while placing greater emphasis on domestic value creation and national control over mineral resources.

Burkina Faso has tightened state control over its gold industry, expanded the role of state-owned SOPAMIB and moved strategic mining assets under greater government influence.

Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo said in 2025 that the government intended to nationalise additional industrial mines as part of its resource-sovereignty strategy.

The government has also created a sovereign mining investment fund aimed at retaining more mineral wealth within the domestic economy.

Gold strengthens external position

The mining surge is also reshaping Burkina Faso’s broader economic position.

The IMF said strong gold exports helped move the current account from a deficit equal to 3.5 percent of GDP in 2024 to a surplus of 6.3 percent in 2025.

Real GDP expanded by 5.3 percent, supported by stronger mining activity and favourable gold prices.

That performance potentially gives Ouagadougou greater bargaining power as it seeks foreign capital while simultaneously demanding better terms from investors.

What happens next?

Attention will now turn to whether Sarmady submits a formal proposal and what type of investment it seeks.

A mining acquisition, exploration partnership, processing venture or financing arrangement would each carry different implications.

Until such a proposal is submitted and approved, however, the Saudi development remains an expression of interest.

What is already clear is that Burkina Faso’s gold sector, which generated roughly $10bn in exports in 2025, is becoming harder for international investors to ignore.
