Keypoints:

  • Mane persuaded Senegal to resume play after penalty protest
  • VAR drama delayed the final by 14 minutes in Rabat
  • Senegal won a second Afcon title in three editions

SADIO Mane closed the Africa Cup of Nations chapter of his international career on Sunday night not merely as a champion, but as a figure of authority whose calm intervention preserved Senegal’s place in history.

The 33-year-old forward played a decisive off-ball role during a moment of chaos in the final against Morocco, convincing his teammates to return to the pitch after a controversial late penalty decision sparked a walk-off protest.
Mane’s intervention proved pivotal. After a prolonged stoppage, a missed Moroccan penalty and a tense extra-time period, Senegal secured a 1–0 victory in Rabat, lifting their second Africa Cup of Nations trophy in three tournaments and reinforcing Mane’s legacy as one of Africa’s most influential footballers.

VAR call triggers late-night turmoil

The final descended into confusion deep into stoppage time when the referee, following consultation with VAR, awarded Morocco a penalty that offered the hosts a last-gasp chance to claim their first continental title in 50 years.

Senegal head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw reacted angrily, charging onto the pitch and ordering his players to leave in protest at the decision. Amid heated exchanges between both teams and mounting pressure from officials, the match was suspended.

As several Senegal players headed toward the tunnel, Mane remained behind, visibly reluctant to abandon the contest.

According to Reuters, it was the former Liverpool forward who warned teammates of the consequences of refusing to continue and urged them to return to the field.

Veteran advice shapes turning point

During the delay, which stretched to nearly 14 minutes, Mane sought counsel from Claude Le Roy, the veteran French coach working pitchside for French television.

‘Sadio came to ask me what I would do in his place,’ Le Roy said. ‘I told him quite simply, “I would ask your teammates to come back”.’

Le Roy, who has coached at a record nine Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and previously managed Senegal, is widely regarded as one of the competition’s most experienced voices.

Shortly after, Senegal resumed play. Morocco’s Brahim Diaz then squandered the penalty opportunity, his panenka shot going straight to the keeper’s arms, and swinging momentum firmly back toward the Senegalese.

Extra-time strike seals title

With emotions settled, Senegal regrouped and asserted control in extra time. A decisive goal secured a 1–0 victory, delivering the West Africans their second Cup of Nations title in the past three editions.

The triumph follows Senegal’s breakthrough success in 2021, when Mane converted the winning penalty in the final and was also named Player of the Tournament — an honour he repeated on Sunday.

Across six Afcon tournaments, Mane finishes with two winners’ medals, a runners-up finish in 2019, and 11 goals in 29 finals-phase appearances.

‘I will stop here,’ Mane says

After lifting the trophy, Mane suggested the curtain had fallen on his Africa Cup of Nations journey.

‘My last AFCON? Yes, I think I’ve said it — I’ll stop here,’ he told reporters. ‘The next generation is ready. They’ll do the job. I’ll be their 12th man.’

His remarks immediately stirred debate back home, where supporters regard him as both captain and conscience of the national team.

World Cup may be final act

Mane is widely expected to consider full international retirement after Senegal compete at the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

However, coach Thiaw has publicly challenged the idea.

‘The decision is not his to make,’ he said before the final. ‘The people want to see him continue. I think he made a rash decision. The country doesn’t agree — and as the coach, I don’t agree.’

Whether or not he features beyond the World Cup, Sunday’s final ensured Mane’s Afcon farewell was defined not by controversy, but by composure — the mark of a player whose influence extended far beyond goals.
