IN a move that caught Kenya’s political circles off guard, President William Ruto met his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, at Kenyatta’s rural home in Gatundu South, Kiambu County. The meeting has stirred widespread speculation about its timing and intent, given their fraught relationship since the 2022 elections.

The rift that shaped Kenyan politics

Kenyatta, who ruled from 2013 to 2022, endorsed opposition leader Raila Odinga in the 2022 presidential election, distancing himself from his former deputy, Ruto. Throughout the campaigns, Kenyatta branded Ruto as untrustworthy, while Ruto criticised Kenyatta’s administration for failing to address the economic struggles of Kenyans.

Ruto’s presidency has since faced significant challenges, including accusations of poor governance, corruption, and unpopular tax hikes. Public discontent has been palpable, with protests erupting earlier this year over the rising cost of living.

What was discussed?

State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed described the meeting as focused on ‘issues of national and regional importance.’ President Ruto praised Kenyatta’s statesmanship during the 2022 power transition and acknowledged the foundation laid during his tenure in areas like agriculture, healthcare, and infrastructure.

The conversation reportedly touched on Raila Odinga’s candidacy for African Union Commission chairmanship. Both leaders urged international partners to back Odinga’s bid, a move observers say signals a strategic alignment between former rivals.

Fresh political realignments?

Kenyatta’s meeting with Ruto has sparked questions about potential political recalibrations. Some analysts suggest the dialogue could pave the way for broader consensus on governance as Ruto gears up for re-election in 2027.

Ruto’s efforts to co-opt opposition figures, including members of Odinga’s ODM party, have been seen as an attempt to consolidate power and silence dissent. His recent backing of Odinga’s AU bid may further indicate a tactical pivot towards fostering unity among Kenya’s political heavyweights.

Public reaction

While some Kenyans welcome the gesture of collaboration, others remain sceptical. ‘Is this a genuine reconciliation or just a political chess move?’ asked a political commentator on a local TV panel.

As President Ruto’s approval ratings continue to dip, this unexpected meeting with Kenyatta could either bolster his political standing or raise further doubts about his governance strategy.

For now, the meeting remains a significant development in Kenya’s dynamic political landscape, hinting at shifting alliances and possible unity amid persistent challenges.
