RAXIO Group has opened Angola’s largest and most advanced data centre, a $30 million facility that marks a major step in the country’s digital transformation.
The centre, located in Cacuaco, Luanda Province, has capacity for up to 3 megawatts of IT power and over 800 racks. It is the only commercial data facility in Angola built to Tier III standards, ensuring uninterrupted services even during maintenance.
Angola’s Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, Mário Oliveira, described the development as ‘a leap forward for our country’s digital economy’. Speaking at the launch, he said the investment supports Angola’s ambition to become a regional technology leader.
Boost to speed and reliability
Raxio Angola sits close to the country’s key undersea cable landing stations and will host the national Internet Exchange Point. This means more internet traffic will remain in-country rather than being routed abroad, a change expected to cut costs while improving speed and reliability.
The 19,000-square-metre campus is the largest in Raxio’s portfolio, with plans to expand capacity to more than 7MW within five years.
‘By bringing world-class infrastructure, we are unlocking faster, more reliable internet and creating the conditions for Angola’s future competitiveness and digital independence,’ said Maria Miguel Pinto, Raxio Angola’s General Manager. Pinto joined the company last month after heading IBM’s operations in Angola.
Built for resilience and sustainability
The site is powered by two independent substations, supported by backup generators and UPS devices, giving it what the company describes as ‘Tier III plus’ reliability.
In line with sustainability goals, 70 percent of the facility’s power comes from renewable sources. Energy-efficient cooling, a water recycling plant and on-site irrigation systems have been integrated to reduce environmental impact.
‘This facility is truly a game-changer for Angola,’ said Raxio Group CEO Robert Skjødt. ‘It’s not just about infrastructure—it’s about creating opportunity and laying the foundation for a thriving digital economy.’
Driving growth and jobs
Raxio says the facility will generate high-value technical and operational jobs for Angolans while enabling local hosting for critical systems. The data centre’s carrier-neutral design will allow customers to interconnect with multiple network and internet service providers, cutting costs and increasing flexibility.
Independent consultant Faissal Abdallah, formerly Africell Angola’s Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, welcomed the launch, noting it will ‘enhance the resilience of the existing infrastructure’.
Expanding footprint across Africa
With operational centres now in Uganda, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cote d’Ivoire and Angola, Raxio has established the continent’s widest data centre footprint. The company is also preparing new developments in Tanzania as part of its expansion strategy.
