THE suspended central bank governor of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, is now confronting criminal charges, including misappropriation of funds, as revealed in court papers filed by government lawyers on Tuesday. Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Tinubu earlier this month and subsequently detained by state security agents, who had not disclosed the specific charges against him.
In response to the detention, Emefiele’s lawyer appeared before the Abuja High Court and requested a declaration that his client’s detention violated his fundamental rights, urging his immediate release. Emefiele himself was not present in court during the proceedings.
As of now, Emefiele has not been formally charged with any offences. However, government lawyers informed the court that they obtained an order from the lower magistrate court to extend Emefiele’s detention while investigations are ongoing.
According to court documents submitted by the Attorney General’s office and the Department of State Security, Emefiele is facing charges of criminal breach of trust and criminal misappropriation of funds, among others, which carry significant prison sentences if he is convicted.
In response to Emefiele’s application challenging his detention, the government lawyer argued that only a federal court possessed the necessary jurisdiction to hear the case.
Judge Hamza Muazu of the Abuja High Court stated that he would make a ruling on July 13 to determine whether the court has the jurisdiction to proceed with the matter, thereby adding to the ongoing concerns surrounding the detention and legal proceedings involving Nigeria’s suspended central bank governor.
