Key points:

  • Niger plans to launch a national airline and a regional carrier for the Sahel alliance.
  • The initiative aims to boost travel and economic ties with Mali and Burkina Faso.
  • Aviation regulations are being eased to attract investment and improve air transport.

NIGER has unveiled plans to establish two new airlines to enhance connectivity within the country and the wider Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which includes Mali and Burkina Faso. The announcement was made by Salissou Mahaman Salissou, Niger’s Minister of Transportation and Equipment, during a recent presentation.

Boosting regional connectivity

According to Minister Salissou, launching a national airline and a regional carrier is a s
trategic move to improve mobility, strengthen economic ties, and facilitate seamless air travel within the AES bloc.

‘The creation of an airline dedicated to the Alliance of Sahel States is a priority,’ Salissou stated, as quoted by local media. ‘We aim to ensure that our people can travel safely and efficiently across borders.’

Government’s aviation modernisation plan

The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to modernise Niger’s aviation sector to attract both domestic and foreign investment. He noted that the government has taken measures to make air transport more accessible and efficient.

To streamline the process, the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) has relaxed regulations, simplifying the process of obtaining overflight and landing permits. ‘We have also made it easier to secure the necessary certification to establish and operate an airline,’ Salissou added.

Improving domestic air access

Beyond regional connectivity, the national airline is expected to improve access to remote parts of Niger, particularly for emergency medical services. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader goal of enhancing infrastructure and public services across the country.

By prioritising air transport development, Niger aims to strengthen its aviation industry, boost economic opportunities, and enhance mobility for its citizens and neighbouring states.
