NAMIBIA’S newly elected president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, marked a historic milestone as she addressed the media following her victory in the country’s recent elections. Speaking at a South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) Party press conference in Windhoek, the president-elect expressed pride in Namibia’s peaceful election process and emphasised the significant role the youth played in securing SWAPO’s win.
Nandi-Ndaitwah, who is set to become Namibia’s first female president, highlighted the high voter turnout and political stability as a testament to the country’s maturing democracy. ‘This election has been a triumph of political tolerance and resilience,’ she said, acknowledging the peaceful and disciplined participation of Namibians in the process.
Youth empowerment takes centre stage
The president-elect focused on the importance of Namibia’s youth, noting their decisive role in granting SWAPO the mandate to govern. ‘The youth of Namibia played the most pivotal role in granting SWAPO the mandate, and we owe it to them,’ she stated, highlighting that the majority of eligible voters were young people.
She pledged to honour the trust placed in her party by the youth, stressing the need for SWAPO to reconnect with the people and regain their trust. ‘We must work harder to regenerate the love for SWAPO from our people,’ Nandi-Ndaitwah added.
Challenges and vision for governance
Looking forward, Nandi-Ndaitwah outlined her governance vision, promising that her administration would tackle the country’s pressing challenges, including unemployment, inequality, and economic transformation. ‘It’s not going to be business as usual,’ she emphasised, calling for collective effort and responsibility to meet SWAPO’s promises to the Namibian people.
She also reiterated the party’s commitment to fighting corruption and ensuring that Namibia’s economic independence is realised. ‘SWAPO brought political independence, and now we must achieve economic independence in our lifetime,’ Nandi-Ndaitwah stated.
