NAMIBIA has officially revoke visa-free access for travellers from more than 30 countries, including the United States and United Kingdom, effective April 1, 2025. The move, finalised by Namibia’s Cabinet last year, is now being implemented shortly after the swearing-in of the country’s new president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
The decision is a direct response to what Namibia describes as a lack of reciprocity—Namibian passport holders are required to obtain visas to enter the US, UK, and many European countries, while citizens from those same countries have enjoyed visa-free entry into Namibia for years.
Online visa applications now required
From April, affected travellers will need to apply for a visa in advance using Namibia’s online visa portal or secure a visa on arrival at entry points. The US embassy in Namibia has already issued a public advisory on the change, recommending American citizens apply ahead of travel.
The UK revoked visa-free access for Namibian citizens in 2023, a move that likely influenced Namibia’s decision to implement this
policy.
Tourism industry voices concern
While Namibia’s stance is based on diplomatic fairness, there are concerns about potential impacts on its tourism-dependent economy. Countries like Germany—Namibia’s largest source of tourists—will also be affected. Previously, most European travellers could enter the country without a visa.
The local tourism industry has warned that the move could lead to a decline in tourist arrivals, particularly from first-world countries who are now required to undergo added administrative steps before travel.
