Keypoints:
- Mugabe’s son charged after Johannesburg shooting
- Gardener hospitalised following incident
- Court delays case pending further investigation
BELLARMINE Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of Zimbabwe’s late former president Robert Mugabe, has appeared before a South African court charged with attempted murder following a shooting incident at a Johannesburg residence last week.
The accused appeared in court on Monday but was not required to enter a plea. Proceedings were postponed until March 3 as investigators continue gathering evidence related to the case.
Case centres on Johannesburg shooting
According to details presented in court, the charges stem from a shooting that left a gardener seriously injured at a mansion where Mugabe had been staying. The incident occurred on Thursday, and the victim remains hospitalised, police confirmed.
The court heard that Mugabe, believed to be in his late twenties, will remain in custody until his next appearance. A second suspect has also been charged in connection with the incident.
Both men face an additional charge of defeating the ends of justice after authorities failed to recover the firearm allegedly used during the shooting.
Legal case draws regional attention
The case has drawn widespread attention across southern Africa due to the political legacy attached to the Mugabe family and the cross-border legal implications of a high-profile Zimbabwean figure facing serious criminal charges in South Africa. The outcome could test both judicial cooperation and public scrutiny surrounding prominent political families in the region.
Defence yet to outline position
Sinenhlanhla Mnguni, legal counsel representing Bellarmine Mugabe, declined to comment on his client’s stance regarding the allegations when approached after the hearing. He indicated that a formal response would be provided at a later stage.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed the circumstances leading up to the shooting, and investigators continue to search for the missing weapon. Police officials said further forensic and witness evidence is being gathered before the next court date.
The postponement is a routine procedural step in South African criminal proceedings when investigations remain ongoing.
Legacy of a controversial political family
Bellarmine Mugabe is one of the children of Robert Mugabe, who ruled Zimbabwe for nearly four decades after leading the country to independence from Britain in 1980. His presidency ended abruptly in 2017 following a military intervention that forced his resignation after 37 years in power.
Robert Mugabe later died in 2019 at the age of 95 while receiving medical treatment in Singapore.
While members of the Mugabe family have largely stayed out of frontline politics since his death, their activities continue to attract public and media interest across the region.
Investigation continues
South African police have not released further details about the motive behind the shooting or the relationship between those involved. Officials say updates will depend on the progress of forensic analysis and witness statements ahead of the March hearing.
The injured gardener’s condition has not been publicly updated beyond confirmation that he remains under medical care.
The case is expected to return to court next month, when prosecutors may present additional evidence or clarify the charges depending on investigative findings.
