SCORES of prominent figures in Morocco, including former ministers, rallied on Wednesday, calling for the annulment of the country’s normalisation agreement with Israel as a gesture of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The petition, signed by individuals such as former Justice Minister Mustafa Ramid, former Education Minister Lahcen Daoudi, Islamic scholar Ahmed Raïssouni, writers, and lawyers, aims to pressure the government into canceling the agreement.
‘Normalisation only increases Israel’s intransigence in further killing and expelling of the Palestinian people,’ stated the signatories.
The plea urged the government to permanently close the Israeli liaison office in Rabat while withdrawing the Moroccan liaison office in Tel Aviv.
The agreement between Morocco and Israel, reinstated on December 10, 2020, marked the resumption of diplomatic relations that had been suspended in 2000 amid the second Palestinian Intifada.
Morocco joined the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan as the fourth Arab country to normalize ties with Israel in 2020.
Following a surprise attack by the Palestinian group Hamas on October 7, Israel launched extensive air and ground assaults in the Gaza Strip.
As of the latest update, the media office in the besieged enclave reported a staggering toll of 14,532 casualties from Israeli air and ground attacks since the escalation began, including more than 6,000 children and 4,000 women.
