Keypoints:

  • Mauritius leads 2025’s most viral water destinations
  • Maui and Niagara Falls also rank in the top three
  • Study based on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube posts

MAURITIUS has officially claimed the title of the world’s most iconic water destination on social media in 2025, according to a new study. The idyllic African island leads the rankings based on posts across TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, highlighting its irresistible allure for travellers keen to capture and share breathtaking moments.

The research, conducted by GoPro Alternatives — a platform comparing action cameras — analysed millions of posts from the world’s top water locations. Mauritius emerged on top with a staggering 7.2 million mentions across the three major platforms.

Crystal-clear waters steal the show

Renowned for its pristine beaches, shimmering turquoise lagoons, and unspoiled coastlines, Mauritius has become a dream spot for globetrotters and content creators alike. Highlights such as Île aux Cerfs and Le Morne Brabant consistently dazzle visitors with opportunities for snorkelling, kite surfing, and wildlife encounters — including rare sights like pink pigeons and giant tortoises.

The island reigns supreme on TikTok with 2 million posts, takes second place on Instagram with 5.2 million posts, and ranks highly on YouTube with 78,000 uploads. These figures firmly establish Mauritius as the go-to destination for travellers seeking stunning landscapes and thrilling adventures to share online.

Maui and Niagara Falls follow closely

Hot on Mauritius’s heels is Maui in Hawaii, which claims the second spot overall. Maui holds the crown for the most Instagrammable water destination, boasting an impressive 8.1 million posts thanks to its diverse beaches and vibrant marine life.

Niagara Falls, straddling the border between the United States and Canada, secures third place. It tops the YouTube rankings, drawing millions with its sheer natural power and awe-inspiring cascades.

Rounding out the top five are Italy’s picturesque Amalfi Coast and the lush Hawaiian island of Kauai, each capturing the hearts — and camera lenses — of travellers worldwide.

The world’s top 10 most iconic water destinations on social media:

  1. Mauritius, East Africa
  2. Maui, Hawaii, USA
  3. Niagara Falls, USA/Canada
  4. Amalfi Coast, Italy
  5. Kauai, Hawaii, USA
  6. Curaçao, Caribbean
  7. Bora Bora, French Polynesia
  8. Florida Keys, USA
  9. Blue Lagoon, Iceland
  10. Phi Phi Islands, Thailand

The findings, reported by GoPro Alternatives, mirror a broader trend noted by American Express in its global travel study: nearly half of today’s travellers (48%) are now selecting destinations they can ‘show off’ on social media.

In a world where travel memories are increasingly shared through a screen, Mauritius’s captivating beauty continues to steal the spotlight — and the hearts of millions.
