THE government of Mauritius has introduced a groundbreaking initiative offering free mobile internet to citizens aged 18 to 25 as part of its strategy to prepare the next generation for the country’s digital future. This scheme, which officially launched on Sunday, aims to equip young Mauritians with the tools and resources needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
The initiative was first announced during Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth’s Budget Speech for 2024-2025. According to the government’s official statement, the programme
is expected to benefit around 100,000 young people in the 18-25 age group and is being administered by the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA).
Eligible participants can access the free service by registering on the MRA’s website, where they will need to provide their National Identity Card number and mobile phone details. Once their application is approved, users can receive a renewable monthly data package of 200GB from one of the country’s three leading mobile operators: My.t Mobile, Emtel, and Chili Mauritius. The service includes 4G and 5G connectivity, as well as access to over 350 Wi-Fi hotspots across the island.
In his speech during the launch of the scheme, Prime Minister Jugnauth emphasised the programme’s role in helping young people ‘reach their full potential in a modern digital world.’ He highlighted the importance of access to digital tools, platforms, and online educational resources as a way to foster personal and professional growth. The programme also aims to support youth employment in the growing IT and technology sectors.
Jugnauth underscored the government’s commitment to making internet access affordable for all, ensuring that young people from different socioeconomic backgrounds have equal opportunities to benefit from the digital economy.
However, aware that free internet services may be used for non-educational purposes, Jugnauth urged young people
to use the internet responsibly. He emphasised the importance of avoiding misuse and remaining focused on the opportunities the digital world offers for learning, employment, and skill development.
This initiative marks a significant step in Mauritius’ broader efforts to advance digital literacy and create a tech-savvy workforce ready to meet the challenges of a digital future. The free mobile internet scheme is not only an investment in the country’s youth but also a strategic move toward fostering a digitally inclusive society.
