MALI’S military junta disclosed on Monday that the presidential elections, initially slated for February, are likely to experience a minor delay due to technical reasons. The junta assured the public that a revised timeline for the elections would be announced in the near future.
Originally, Mali had scheduled the first round of presidential voting for February 4, 2024, with a second round to follow two weeks later.
In a statement issued by the junta, it outlined various factors contributing to the decision to postpone the elections temporarily. One of the key reasons cited was a dispute with a French company concerning a civil registry database. This technical matter has necessitated a re-evaluation of the election timeline.
The presidential elections are a crucial step in Mali’s journey towards reestablishing constitutional governance after experiencing military coups in August 2020 and May 2021. While the delay is expected to be relatively minor, it underscores the importance of resolving technical issues and ensuring a smooth and transparent electoral process as Mali strives to return to constitutional rule.
