MALAWI’S Minister of Mining, Monica Chang’anamuno, is set to be a featured speaker at the upcoming Critical Mineral Africa (CMA) 2023 summit, underscoring the country’s commitment to establishing a modern and sustainable national mining industry. The event, organised by Energy Capital & Power, will take place from October 17-19 and will be held alongside the African Energy Week 2023 conference.
While Malawi is currently a small-scale producer of uranium, gemstones, coal, and construction minerals, it has ambitious plans to explore and process its diverse mineral resources. These resources include phosphates, bauxite, limestones, rare earths, and graphite, signalling a significant potential for economic growth.
In a bid to boost investor confidence and attract foreign investment, the Malawian government has taken proactive steps, including the introduction of a new Mines and Minerals Bill in April. This legislation aims to promote transparency and accountability in the mining sector by establishing an independent regulatory authority. If approved, this regulator will be responsible for granting mining licences, overseeing mining operations, and advising the Minister on mining-related policies.
Malawi, as a newcomer to mining development, places a strong emphasis on local value creation and retention. The government has set standards requiring mining investors to reinvest 0.45 percent of their total profits into the communities where they operate. This strategy aims to leverage mining investments to create both forward and backward linkages that enhance local capacity, generate employment opportunities, and stimulate industrial growth.
The Critical Mineral Africa 2023 summit will provide a platform to discuss untapped mineral potential, evolving regulatory frameworks, community engagement, and more, not only in Malawi but also across the southern African region. The participation of several prominent African mining ministers underscores their collective commitment to preserving resource sovereignty and positioning the critical minerals sector as a strategic economic pillar.
In addition to the summit’s focus on critical minerals, it will also highlight Africa as the primary investment destination in this sector. The event offers a unique opportunity for sponsors, exhibitors, and delegates to engage with energy, mining, and finance leaders, making it a must-attend event for stakeholders in these industries.
