THE 8th African Writers Conference (AWC), one of the continent’s most prestigious literary gatherings, will be held in Maseru, Lesotho, from October 27 to November 2, 2025. Organised by the African Writers Development Trust (AWDT) in partnership with Writers Space Africa (WSA), the conference will bring together writers, publishers, literary enthusiasts, and cultural leaders under the theme: Celebrating African Narratives: Uniting Cultures and Empowering Creatives.
Building on the success of the 2024 edition in Kigali, Rwanda—where discussions focused on the role of children’s literature—the 2025 edition will expand the conversation to explore how African storytelling fosters cultural unity and equips writers for the global literary scene.
The event will feature:
- Panel discussions on African literature and publishing,
- Creative writing workshops led by renowned authors,
- Book exhibitions and networking sessions,
- Cultural performances celebrating Africa’s diverse heritage.
The African Writers Awards, a major highlight of the conference, will once again recognise outstanding literary talent across the continent. Following last year’s winners—including Ghana’s Elizabeth Dwamena-Asare (Short Stories) and Kenya’s Grace Thuo (Children’s Literature)—the 2025 awards are expected to attract an even wider range of submissions.
Why Lesotho?
Lesotho, a country steeped in rich oral traditions and literary history, provides a perfect backdrop for this celebration of African storytelling. The conference will not only highlight Basotho literature but also foster collaborations among writers across Africa, further strengthening the
continent’s literary ecosystem.
